For the last 20+ years, I have worked for a faith-based agency that serves the needs of many. This agency has numerous programs, and the specific program I work for provides emergency legal representation (i.e., representation at restraining order hearings) for adults who have experienced domestic abuse.
Here is some information I hope will be helpful should you, or someone you know, be in a domestic abuse situation:
WHAT IS DOMESTIC ABUSE?
Domestic abuse (also called “domestic violence,” “intimate partner abuse/violence” and “child abuse”) can take various forms such as physical, sexual, threats to do physical harm, emotional abuse and stalking. It should be noted that physical abuse may or may not leave marks. Abuse can happen to women, men and to children.

BEYOND ABUSE
To move beyond abuse, a person first must be in a physical location where they are safe. Sometimes the abusive person can be legally forced to leave the residence. In other cases, the person who has been abused may need to find another place to live. If not financially prepared for such a move, she/he may temporarily move in with family, or friends, or into a domestic abuse shelter. Other needs often arise during this transition. If a person was being financially supported by the one who is abusing them, it can mean they will need to find employment.
Governmental programs, church ministries, and other organizations can often help with things like shelter, food, assistance in finding a job, and emergency legal needs (such as a restraining order). It may take making several phone calls to find the right sources of help, but in most communities these services are offered.
Although a person’s physical needs are often the first focus during this type of transition, their emotional healing is also key to moving beyond the abuse. Just as physical wounds take time to heal, emotional healing from domestic abuse also takes time. Getting counseling can be immensely helpful, and many cities offer free counseling for those who have been abused.
